
Harold Robert Callahan
Harold R. Callahan, age 81, of Waukegan, died on Sunday, November
19, 2006 at Vista Medical Center East in Waukegan.
He was born at home during a snowstorm in Waukegan on January
4, 1925, the youngest child of James J. and Helen (Bauer Wall)
Callahan. He attended St. Anastasia Catholic Grade School, Waukegan
Township High School (42) and the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign
(49). He was a Sergeant in the Army during World War II in the
Pacific Theater and married Joan (Pfau) on October 22, 1949. He
owned and retired from his familys business, North Shore Printers
Inc. of Waukegan, in 1995. With the exception of college and the
army, he never lived more than a half of a block off of North
Avenue in Waukegan.
He was active in his community and his activities included 30-year
Membership in the Waukegan Rotary Club, President of the North
Shore Club of Printing House Craftsmen, School Board Member and
Football, Basketball and Track Coach at St. Anastasia Catholic
Grade School, Chairman of the Citizens Committee to form a Waukegan
Unit School District, President of the Waukegan-North Chicago
Chamber of Commerce, President of the United Way of Lake County,
Sponsor of Junior Achievement, Member of the Waukegan-North Chicago
Jaycees, Coach and President of Northside Athletic Club, Chairman
of the Lake County Public Building Commission that built the jail,
Board Member of the Lake County Easter Seal Society, Board Member
of the Lake County Republican Federation, Board Member of the
Printing Industry of Illinois, Member of Illinois CPA Society,
Member of the Waukegan City Club, Board Member of Habitat for
Humanity of Lake County, Recipient of the Exchange Club Book of
Golden Deeds Award, Golden Member of the Glen Flora Country Club,
Lifetime Member of the University of Illinois Alumni Association
and a Lifetime Member of Beta Eta Alumni Association (Pi Kappa
Alpha Chapter at the University of Illinois where he was President
as a student.)
Survivors include his best friend and wife of 57 years, Joan (Pfau);
his wonderful children, Joe (Caroline), Peter (Crystal), Jay (Mary),
Melissa, Charlotte (Martin) Wozniak, Shelagh (Ray LaSoya) and
Amy; his beautiful grandchildren Kimberly, Kellyn, Katie, Tierney,
Chandler, Zach, Jake, Matt, Grant, Zoe and Henry.
He was preceded in death by his father; mother; sister, Alice
(Bill) Galbraith; brother, Edward; son-in-law, David Franklin;
and his adored son, Henry.
